A/B Testing Ad Creatives: A Practical Playbook
Most creative tests are statistically meaningless theatre. How to run tests that produce real winners — and what to do with them.
01Why most creative tests lie
Two ads, £50 each, 48 hours, declare a winner — this is the standard "test" and it is noise. With a 1% conversion rate you need thousands of impressions per variant before the difference means anything.
Worse, most teams test trivial variations: the same image with a different button colour. The auction barely distinguishes them, so the data cannot either.
02Test concepts, not cosmetics
A meaningful A/B test compares different angles — a lifestyle scene versus a product-on-white hero, an emotional hook versus a rational one, a testimonial versus a demo. Big deltas produce fast, trustworthy signals.
Pair every visual concept with its natural copy angle. Testing a bold image with timid copy contaminates both readings.
03The compare-and-crown loop
Put exactly two creatives side by side. Give both enough delivery to clear the learning phase. Crown the winner formally — tag it, track its cumulative wins, and make it the incumbent every new challenger must beat.
Over a quarter, this produces something invaluable: a ranked library of proven concepts and an institutional memory of why they won. Creative decisions stop being arguments and start being lookups.
04What to do with a winner
Scale it, clone its angle into new formats (static → video → carousel), and schedule its organic twin. A creative winner is not an endpoint — it is a seed for the next generation of tests.
